a degree in political campaigning?Submitted by Graham on Tue Mar 10, 2009 City University London has created a new graduate course in political campaigning. Writing as someone that worked as a political hack for 3 years, the idea of a university degree in political campaigning sounds a little formal. Surely the real learning in this profession is still outside a classroom? But as political campaigning gets more sophisticated the time has come for some academic training to go along with the 'in the trenches' stuff. Maybe if this course was around when I graduated I might have made a few less mistakes as a Special Assistant. I'm thinking back to a speech I gave that produced a quote on the front page of a Qubec City daily paper claiming that the federalist Premier of Quebec was planning for the eventual separation of Quebec from Canada. Fortunately, the Premier's Chief of Staff, John Parisella, laughed when I went to explain myself and said that if he had ten cents for each time he was misquoted he would be a very rich man. Maybe I could offer this up for the course at City University? So for anyone interested in the pursuit of an MA in Political Campaigning and Reporting, see if this is you: "This new MA is for graduates looking to get into or, at the beginning of, careers in political campaigning, consultancy, advocacy or journalism." Still interested? There's more on the City University website. And remember, there's no such thing as 'off the record'! |
