Join Ed in his campaign to obtain anemia treatment for his
wife and all cancer patients in BC
Ed's first wife
died of breast cancer 15 years ago. Now, Laura, his second
wife, is starting chemotherapy for breast cancer. Ed is appealing
to the BC Minister of Health Services Shirley Bond to provide
access to treatment for anemia, a very difficult side effect
of chemotherapy.
Fatigue, due to anemia as a result of cancer therapy, is
the most difficult side effect of chemotherapy for most cancer
patients. A medication called erythropoietin, or EPO, can
stimulate red blood cell production, reduce anemia and fatigue,
and avoid transfusions.
EPO is available to cancer patients in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba,
and Newfoundland but only to those patients with private drug
coverage in British Columbia. BC Pharmacare does not cover
EPO for seniors and other cancer patients who rely on the
provincial drug plan.
Your voice is urgently needed to ensure that cancer patients
in BC have access to the same treatment standard as those
in other provinces.
